Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe scored one of the best goals of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup when she found the net direct from a corner kick.

Ireland had never scored at a Women's World Cup but that changed four minutes into Wednesday's Group B game against Canada when McCabe produced what is known in soccer as an Olympico goal.

This was the 21st senior international goal scored by 27-year-old McCabe - who plays her club soccer for Arsenal.

Despite McCabe's remarkable finish, Ireland lost the game 2-1.

A Megan Connolly own goal leveled the score on the stroke of half-time, before Adriana Leon netted the winner for Canada in the 53rd minute.

Ireland - who lost 1-0 to Australia last week - can no longer qualify for the knockout phase, even if they beat Nigeria in their final group match.

Meanwhile, Canada now have four points from two games, having drawn 0-0 with Nigeria in their group opener.
