Paris Saint-Germain made a statement on Saturday night by comfortably beating their nearest Ligue 1 title challengers.

Lens had started the weekend just six points behind PSG, who had lost eight of their first 19 games in 2023 across all competitions.

But PSG cruised to a 3-1 victory over Lens in Paris, after the away side had been reduced to 10 men in the 19th minute when Salis Abdul Samed was sent off for an ugly foul on Achraf Hakimi.

PSG were 3-0 up before half-time thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe, Vitinha and Lionel Messi.

Mbappe and Messi combined beautifully for PSG's third goal.

It was scored by Messi from a narrow angle after a cheeky backheeled pass from Mbappe.

This was the 23rd league goal that had been scored by Messi and assisted by Mbappe or vice versa since the start of last season.

PSG eased off in the second half and Lens netted a consolation goal when Przemyslaw Frankowski scored a penalty kick after a handball offense by Fabian Ruiz.
