Kylian Mbappe Scores Two Goals, Including Literal Net-Buster, As PSG Power Past Real Sociedad
Kylian Mbappe scored two goals - including one which literally broke the net - as Paris Saint-Germain won 2-1 at Real Sociedad on Tuesday to secure a 4-1 aggregate victory and a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Mbappe netted after a quarter of an hour and then again in the 56th minute before Mikel Merino got a late consolation goal for the Spanish side.
PSG had beaten Real Sociedad 2-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 clash in France last month.
But home fans at San Sebastian's Anoeta Stadium were hopeful of witnessing a second-leg comeback by their team before Mbappe's opener visibly deflated them.
The supporters behind the goal PSG were attacking in the first half were jumping up and down in unison until they stopped abruptly when Mbappe whipped a superb shot past keeper Alex Remiro from a tight angle.
Mbappe's shot was hit with such force that it caused the netting to breakaway from the post. The game was then briefly delayed while the damage was repaired.
Mbappe's net-busting goal was assisted by an Ousmane Dembele through pass.
The PSG skipper collected the pass in the corner of the 18-yard box near the byline, where he was closely marked by defender Igor Zubeldia.
Mbappe then produced some fine footwork to beat Zubeldia not once but twice before finding the net in style.
After showcasing his fancy footwork for his first goal, Mbappe's second strike of the game was all about his pace.
Mbappe was stood near the halfway line just inches behind Zubeldia when Lee Kang-in pinged a pass in behind the Real Sociedad defense.
When Mbappe reached the ball, less than four seconds later, he was almost 15 yards clear of the center-back.
Mbappe's spectacular speed ensured he had time to consider his finish and he opted to fire a low shot inside Remiro's near post.
Ex-Monaco star Mbappe has now netted 46 goals and provided 26 assists in 69 appearances during his UCL career.
After Tuesday's game, Mbappe was hailed as being better than Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and maybe even a prime Thierry Henry by former Manchester United duo Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves.
