Salah had missed Liverpool's previous eight matches after going to the Africa Cup of Nations and then suffering a hamstring problem.

His return to the field on Saturday came slightly earlier than expected when he was brought on just before half-time to replace the injured Diogo Jota.

Jota left on a stretcher after Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard had fallen on the Portugal international's left knee.

Curtis Jones was also subbed off during the first half after feeling pain in his left ankle.

Liverpool took the lead moments after Jones had left the field when Nunez aimed a perfect lob over Brentford keeper Mark Flekken after racing onto a Jota flick-on.

It was 2-0 to Liverpool 10 minutes after half-time when Mac Allister produced a fine two-touch finish after being set up by Salah.

Salah scored the third goal himself in the 68th minute when he got on the end of a Gakpo flick-on before holding off a challenge from Nathan Collins and firing a low shot past Flekken.

Liverpool failed to keep a clean sheet for the sixth game running when Toney netted from a rebound after Caoimhin Kelleher had parried an effort from Sergio Reguilon.

But Liverpool wrapped up a convincing victory 11 minutes later when Gakpo scored his 10th club goal of the season.
