Olivier Giroud Plays As Emergency Goalkeeper In AC Milan Win At Genoa
Olivier Giroud was deployed as an emergency goalkeeper as AC Milan held on for a 1-0 win at Genoa on Saturday.
The French striker was called upon to stand in for Mike Maignan in the ninth minute of added time after a VAR review had resulted in the former Lille stopper being sent off for a foul on Caleb Ekuban.
Giroud had to keep goal for six minutes and made one vital save when he rushed out at the feet of George Puscas.
Replays showed that Giroud had both of his eyes closed as he bravely punched the ball away from the feet of Puscas.
Giroud's super save came moments after Genoa's goalkeeper had joined Maignan in receiving a red card.
Genoa no.1 Josep Martinez was shown a second yellow card for fouling Yunus Musah after coming up for a corner kick.
The goalkeeping drama in added time came shortly after Christian Pulisic had fired Milan ahead in the 87th minute by scoring his fourth club goal of the season.
Milan's victory saw them leapfrog city rivals Inter at the top of the Serie A table.
