Kylian Mbappe Rescues PSG Against Newcastle After "Disgusting" Late Penalty Decision
Paris Saint-Germain will travel to Borussia Dortmund next month knowing that a win would secure a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League for a 12th straight season.
Indeed, three points in Germany on December 13 would see PSG prevail from a tough Group F in first place.
Such a scenario looked highly unlikely on Tuesday night when PSG trailed Newcastle United 1-0 after more than 90 minutes of play in Paris.
Alexander Isak had given the Magpies the lead midway through the first half when he punished a poor handling error by PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Bradley Barcola missed a hat-trick of golden chances to equalize before a VAR review resulted in PSG being awarded a penalty deep into added time.
The penalty decision seemed very harsh on Tino Livramento, who was punished for handball despite the ball - which was blasted at him by Ousmane Dembele from close range - hitting his chest before striking his arm.
Referee Szymon Marciniak did not give the spot-kick initially but changed his decision after being advised to reconsider.
Ex-England striker Gary Lineker called the penalty decision "ludicrous" in a tweet, while former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood described it as "disgusting" on Sky Sports.
However, football laws analyst Christina Unkel explained on CBS Sports that "it is a penalty under the current interpretations of FIFA" because Livramento's extended left arm had created a "barrier".
Kylian Mbappe converted the penalty confidently to earn his team a precious point.
Tuesday's 1-1 draw left Newcastle third in Group F.
In order to progress in second place, Eddie Howe's side must now beat AC Milan at home on December 13 and hope that PSG do not win at Dortmund.
If PSG beat Dortmund then the best Newcastle can hope for is third spot and a place in the Europa League.
Newcastle will finish bottom of Group F if they lose at home to Milan.
Dortmund have already qualified for the Champions League's round of 16 after winning 3-1 in Milan on Tuesday.
