Sardar Azmoun scored a Goal of the Tournament contender but Iran lost 3-2 to Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.

Roma forward Azmoun acrobatically volleyed Iran ahead in the fourth minute with a superb overhead kick.

But goals from Jassem Gaber and Akram Afif saw tournament hosts Qatar turn the game around before half-time.

A controversial penalty converted by Alireza Jahanbakhsh drew Iran level early in the second half but Almoez Ali scored the winner for Qatar in the 82nd minute.

Iran defender Shoja Khalilzadeh was then sent off in added time.

Qatar will now face Jordan in Saturday's final. Jordan progressed from Tuesday's semi-final by beating South Korea 2-0.
