Scott McTominay Denied Stunning Free-Kick Goal As VAR Review Goes Against Scotland In Loss To Spain
Scott McTominay scored the best goal of his career on Thursday night but it was disallowed following a VAR review.
Scotland midfielder McTominay found the net direct from a brilliant free-kick 59 minutes into his country's Euro 2024 qualifier against Spain in Seville.
The ball was less than three yards away from the byline when McTominay fired in a spectacular strike that left Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon stunned.
McTominay - who had netted two goals for Manchester United in a 2-1 win over Brentford four days earlier - celebrated wildly with his teammates in Seville.
But those celebrations were halted when it became apparent that a VAR check was taking place.
That review eventually resulted in the referee ruling that Scotland defender Jack Hendry had been offside and hindering keeper Simon before McTominay's shot hit the net.
There was initially some confusion about why the goal had been disallowed. It was first suggested that Hendry had been penalized for a foul before UEFA later confirmed that an offside had been called.
The score was still 0-0 at this point but Spain went on to win 2-0.
Spain captain Alvaro Morata headed home the opener after a cross from Jesus Navas on 73 minutes.
Substitute Oihan Sancet then wrapped up the win for Spain.
