FC Midtjylland exited the UEFA Europa League on Thursday after a 4-0 hammering at home to Sporting Lisbon.

Sporting reached the last 16 courtesy of a 5-1 aggregate victory after Midtjylland had earned a creditable 1-1 draw in the first leg seven days earlier.

Midtjylland's bad night started when former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates fired Sporting ahead in the 21st minute.

It got even worse for the Danish team before half-time when Paulinho was sent off for collecting two yellow cards.

Pedro Goncalves then struck twice after the interval to make it 3-0.

But the most memorable moment of the game arrived in the 85th minute when Stefan Gartenmann scored a spectacular own goal.

The Midtjylland defender beat his own keeper from 25 yards after failing to look before playing a back-pass.
