Toulouse Beat Liverpool In Five-Goal Thriller After Late VAR Call Disallows Jarell Quansah Equalizer
Liverpool lost for only the second time this season when Jurgen Klopp's men fell to a 3-2 defeat away at Toulouse in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
The Reds' only previous loss this season had been the subject of intense controversy after a VAR communication error mistakingly disallowed a Luis Diaz goal in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in the Premier League in September.
Thursday's game also saw Liverpool denied a goal following a VAR review.
Jarell Quansah thought he had scored his first senior goal to rescue a point in the seventh minute of added time. But the goal was eventually disallowed for an apparent handball by Alexis Mac Allister 13 seconds before the ball hit the net.
Despite the controversial nature of Toulouse's victory, the hosts had been the better side.
Goals from Aron Donnum and Thijs Dallinga - who also saw a goal disallowed - gave the French outfit a deserved 2-0 lead.
But a Cristian Casseres Jr own goal sparked hope of a Liverpool fightback in the 73rd minute.
Frank Magri restored Toulouse's two-goal advantage moments later before Diogo Jota made it 3-2 with a slick solo strike in the 89th minute.
Quansah's late effort clearly meant a lot to the 20-year-old but his celebrations were halted by a VAR review that took just under two and a half minutes to reach its conclusion.
Highlights: Toulouse 3-2 Liverpool
Liverpool remain top of Group E despite Thursday's result.
The Reds have nine points from four games. Toulouse sit second with seven points, ahead of Union Saint-Gilloise and LASK with four and three respectively.
Elsewhere in the Europa League on Thursday, West Ham beat Olympiacos 1-0 in London, after Brighton had won 2-0 at Ajax.
