Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk Asks Referee "Have You Been Drinking?" During Draw With Arsenal
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was not impressed with referee Chris Kavanagh during Saturday's 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Anfield.
Arsenal survived a strong penalty appeal in the 19th minute after captain Martin Odegaard performed an NBA-style move to take a low ball away from Mo Salah.
Gunners defender William Saliba admitted after the game that his team got lucky with the decision, telling Viaplay: "Of course it was a penalty. But I'm not the ref."
Another decision went against Liverpool in the second half when Van Dijk was adjudged to have fouled Gabriel Jesus near the center circle.
Van Dijk vented his frustration towards ref Kavanagh. Lip-reading fans watching on TV even spotted the Dutchman asking the ref: "Have you been drinking?"
Van Dijk's words were accompanied by a clear gesture as he mimed tipping a glass towards his mouth.
There was no immediate punishment for Van Dijk's outburst and the Reds defender ended Saturday's game without receiving a yellow card.
However, he could yet face a retrospective punishment if his conduct towards the referee is judged to have been improper.
