Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk converted a penalty in added time to secure a dramatic 1-0 win over Greece in Athens on Monday night.

Greece goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos had earlier saved a spot-kick from former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst during the first half.

Weghorst had been substituted off by the time Denzel Dumfries was fouled by Vangelis Pavlidis.

Therefore, Van Dijk took it upon himself to step up and take responsibility.

A Greek fan attempted to distract Van Dijk by shining a green laser in the Liverpool defender's face.

But Van Dijk confidently fired home from 12 yards to score the seventh goal of his senior international career.

Monday's win moved the Netherlands up to second place in qualifying Group B with 12 points.

Greece also have 12 points but now sit third due to the Netherlands having a superior head-to-head record.

The Netherlands will qualify for Euro 2024 as long as they win one of their final two group games - against Ireland and Gibraltar.

France have already qualified as group winners.

Highlights: Greece 0-1 Netherlands
