Former Manchester United winger Bebe scored one of the best goals the Africa Cup of Nations has ever witnessed during Cape Verde's Group B game against Mozambique on Friday.

The 33-year-old - who was born in Portugal and only started playing for Cape Verde in 2022 - scored direct from a free-kick taken more than 40 yards from goal.

Mozambique keeper Ernan perhaps should have done better, although the ball appeared to swerve violently in the air.

Cape Verde went on to win 3-0 after Ryan Mendes and Kevin Pina joined Bebe on the scoresheet.

Bebe and Co are now guaranteed to progress to the round of 16 regardless of how they get on against Egypt on Monday.

Big things were expected of Bebe when he moved to Old Trafford from Vitoria de Guimaraes for a transfer fee in the region of €9 million in August 2010.

United apparently beat off interest from Real Madrid to secure his signature.

But he flopped at United, making just seven appearances for the club - although he did score in games against Wolves and Bursaspor.

After loan spells at Pacos Ferreira, Rio Ave and Besiktas, Bebe left the Red Devils to return to Portugal with Benfica in July 2014.

He has since turned out for Cordoba, Eibar and Zaragoza but he now plays his club soccer at Raya Vallecano.
