Watch USMNT Goalkeeper Matt Turner Save Two Canada Penalties In Gold Cup Quarter-Final Shootout
Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner was the USMNT hero on Sunday night after saving two penalties in a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final against Canada.
Turner was the star of a spot-kick shootout in Cincinnati as he denied efforts from Steven Vitoria and Liam Fraser.
Brandon Vazquez also failed to convert the USA's first penalty but it did not cost his team as Charles-Andreas Brym hit the crossbar with Canada's final kick.
The USMNT's 3-2 victory in the shootout came after extra time had ended with the score tied at 2-2.
Penalty Shootout Highlights: USA 3-2 Canada
The game had been goalless until the 88th minute when Vazquez headed the USA in front.
But a handball by Miles Robinson gave Canada a route back into the contest moments later. Vitoria converted the resulting penalty, forcing extra time.
The USA had dominated the game in terms of possession and chances but Jacob Shaffelburg struck 19 minutes into extra time to give Canada a 2-1 lead against the run of play.
A Scott Kennedy own goal drew the game level five minutes later.
Turner had not made a single save during two hours of open play but he showed up when it mattered most.
This was Turner's 31st senior international appearance for the USA.
The 29-year-old featured just seven times for Arsenal in all competitions last season after joining from New England Revolution in July 2022.
He has yet to make his Premier League debut.
