The old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” applies perfectly to the Arlington Renegades' coaching. On Wednesday, the UFL released the coaching staffs of all eight clubs, including the Renegades led by head coach Bob Stoops.

Arlington Renegades 2024 Staff

  • Bob Stoops, Head Coach
  • Rick Mueller, General Manager
  • Reggie Davis, Tight Ends/Running Backs
  • Jay Hayes, Defensive Coordinator
  • Jonathan Himebauch, Offensive Line
  • Chuck Long, Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
  • Matt McMillen, Quality Control
  • Marvin Sanders, Defensive Backs
  • Bill Sheridan, Linebackers
  • Scott Spurrier, Special Teams

There are only very minor tweaks compared to last year's staff, with the biggest changes coming at offensive and defensive coordinator. Jonathan Hayes and Tim Lewis, who were co-coordinators with Chuck Long and Jay Hayes, are no longer on the staff. Everyone else is back for another season.

The other slight changes are with positional roles. Matt McMillen returns to quality control after last season being the director of team operations. Reggie Davis takes over the tight ends after Scott Spurrier held that role — along with special teams — last year, but he will continue coaching the running backs as well. While this one isn’t too drastic of a change, Rick Mueller goes from director of player personnel to general manager.

Bob Stoops is the headline name for the Renegades as he returns for his third season at the helm. His regular-season record in the XFL is 6-9 in two seasons, and he is 2-0 in the postseason, with both wins coming last year en route to an XFL Championship win.

Stoops is more well known for what he did in college at Oklahoma, winning 191 games — 80 percent of matchups — in 18 full seasons. That includes 10 Big 12 Conference titles and one national title in 2000.

Long appears to be taking over the playcalling in Arlington after Jonathan Hayes was the main playcaller last year. Jay Hayes will hold down the defense also as the main playcaller after doing it last season for one of the top units in the XFL.

One of the highlights of the coaching staff is offensive line coach Jonathan Himebauch, who has been a staple to spring football for decades. Himebauch is a proven winner, having been the only person to win two XFL titles — one in 2001 as a player and the other in 2023 as a coach. He also won three Grey Cups and a USFL title in 2022 with the Birmingham Stallions.

Spurrier is another one to keep an eye on, as he has been on the Renegades coaching staff with Stoops since 2020. He also teamed up with his dad, Steve Spurrier, with the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

Sanders and Sheridan also return to coaching in the same positions they did last year. This will be Sanders’ third season with the Renegades after joining Stoops in 2020. Sheridan was a long-time NFL and college assistant coach and has been brought back for his second year with the Renegades.

It was important for Arlington to make sure they brought back everyone they could to keep the winning culture in place. After a year of learning how to win on the biggest stage, the Renegades have the final pieces in place to defend their title in a new league.
