Big Game Bob: Third Round for Arlington Renegades Coach Stoops

Arlington Renegades coach Bob Stoops has been through all the changes in the XFL since 2019 and returns to the sidelines in 2024 with the UFL.

For the third time, Arlington Renegades coach Bob Stoops is going through some kind of change with the league. It all started with two different ownership groups for the XFL and now it’s a combined force running the newly merged UFL. The one constant? Stoops.

In 2019, he was the first head coach/general manager hired by the Vince McMahon-led XFL and was given the keys to the Dallas Renegades. This came on the heels of an 18-year career coaching the Oklahoma Sooners from 1999-2016.

During his time at Oklahoma, Stoops won 10 conference titles, was AP Coach of the Year in 2000, claimed two Walter Camp Coach of the Year awards and won the national title in 2000. He never finished a season with a losing record in his tenure.

Bob Stoops has manned the Renegades sideline since the inception of the franchise in 2000.

In his first season in the XFL in 2020, the Renegades went 2-3 before the season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Notable players include former Sooners quarterback Landry Jones and former Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar.

During the transition of new ownership for the XFL, Stoops returned to Oklahoma for one game to coach the Sooners in the Alamo Bowl against the Oregon Ducks after Lincoln Riley left for the USC Trojans. The Sooners went on to win 47-32. Stoops officially ended his coaching career with a 191-48 overall record.

The return of the XFL began in 2023 and the rebranded Arlington Renegades went 4-6 in the regular season. After finishing second in the South Division, the team made the playoffs where it would go on a run. Arlington defeated the Houston Roughnecks and D.C. Defenders to improbably win the XFL Championship.

Entering his third season as the coach of the Renegades, Stoops holds a 6-9 overall record. He’s the only head coach to be part of every version of the relaunched XFL.
