Birmingham Stallions Claim Former Las Vegas Raiders CB Off Waivers, Lose All-USFL Linebacker to Retirement

Birmingham Stallions linebacker Chris Orr was placed on the retired list, opening the door for the team to claim cornerback Isaiah Zuber off waivers on Wednesday.

Birmingham Stallions are making adjustments to the positions behind the defensive line. On Wednesday, the Stallions placed linebacker Chris Orr on the retired list and also claimed cornerback Isaiah Zuber off waivers.

Orr played the past two seasons for the New Jersey Generals in the USFL, racking up 147 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception. His 82 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2023 were good enough to earn him a spot on the All-USFL team.

Prior to spring football, Orr played in three games with the Carolina Panthers in the 2020 season. He spent five seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, making 187 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 10 pass deflections, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 50 games.

USFL fans should be familiar with Zuber as he played for the Houston Gamblers the past two years as a wide receiver, catching 36 passes for 425 yards and five touchdowns.

His performances in the USFL have landed him back in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders in both 2022 and 2023. He also had a stint with the New England Patriots in 2020, hauling in two receptions for 29 yards.

Zuber’s spent four years at Kansas State before transferring to Mississippi State in 2019 for his final season. He finished his college career with 141 receptions for 1,532 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The main question now is whether the Stallions will truly keep Zuber at cornerback or move him to the offense. This isn’t the first time Zuber has been classified as a cornerback; he was listed on defense last year as well when he returned to Houston in the USFL. He also handled kickoff returns for the Gamblers the past two years, so he could be brought in to support the special teams.

UFL teams need to trim rosters down to 50 players by March 23.
