Houston Roughnecks Load Up Defensive Line with Pair of Signings
The Houston Roughnecks added some speed rushers off the edge with a pair of defensive ends. On Wednesday, the team claimed Carlos Kemp off waivers and brought back 2023 Houston Gamblers starting defensive end Isaiah Chambers.
The Birmingham Stallions have had Kemp on the roster since December after he spent the past two years with the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL. In 2022, he put up 51 tackles and five sacks for the Pittsburgh Maulers, and he was a member of the Green Bay Packers in 2021.
The 25-year-old edge rusher played five seasons with the Michigan Wolverines. He made 81 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and one fumble recovery in 45 games.
Chambers was part of the roster cutdown of the Roughnecks on Sunday. He found success in his first season in the USFL with the Houston Gamblers last year, making 30 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
In his last two seasons with McNeese State, he produced 91 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, five pass deflections and five forced fumbles in 18 games. His 10.5 sacks in 2021 earned him a Consensus AP All-American selection and won the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
The Roughnecks will have one week to make final decisions on the roster as they will have to be at 50 players by March 23.
