Memphis Showboats Add Former Green Bay Packers Tight End Before Training Camp
With only a couple of days until training camp gets underway for the UFL, the Memphis Showboats weren’t done adding talent to the roster. On Wednesday, the team inked a deal with former NFL tight end Dominique Dafney.
Dafney started in the NFL in 2020, first signing with the Indianapolis Colts after going unselected in draft. He was waived by the team during final roster cutdowns, leading to a longer stint with his next NFL squad.
The Green Bay Packers picked him up, and he stayed with the team for two seasons. He appeared in 15 games in the green and yellow uniforms, making four catches for 60 yards. His lone NFL touchdown came on a 13-yard catch from Aaron Rodgers in the team’s Week 16 win over the Tennessee Titans. He reached an injury settlement with Green Bay in August of 2022.
For the next two years, Dafney spent time with several teams, including the Denver Broncos, a second stint with the Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who ultimately released him during training camp last year.
During his college years, he attended three schools, starting with Iowa Western in 2016. He played for Iowa in 2017 and 2018 before transferring to Indiana State in 2019, where he rushed for 439 yards and had 196 yards receiving for seven touchdowns and was named as a second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection as a fullback.
Memphis’ tight end room also includes Sage Surratt, Michael Ezeike, Wes Saxton Jr. and Jay Jay Wilson. Surratt will be the favorite to win the job after being arguably the best tight end not only in the USFL, but in spring football last year. Dafney will have to fight for a roster spot, but his fullback background should give him an advantage on making the final cut.
UFL teams will begin training camp on Friday.
