Jake Paul Using Andre August As Career Stepping-Stone: ‘It Keeps Getting Bigger And Bigger’
Jake Paul and his team handpicked Andre August.
Paul matches up against August later tonight in a 200-pound, eight-round main event on DAZN. August is here to be a placard in Paul’s ascent to boxing stardom, which begins by defeating an actual boxer–and August (10-1-1) fits the bill.
“This is a great opportunity,” said Paul (7-1). “So much is always happening in my career. It keeps getting bigger and bigger, and that’s what is going to happen here.”
Paul is looking to become a champion in boxing.
In order to accomplish that lofty goal, he will need to defeat opponents far more talented than August. Yet the only way he can move forward is by attaining a victory tonight, which is expected to be a formality. August’s methodical combination approach leaves him open and makes him vulnerable, and Paul will attack with overhand lefts and rights to end this by knockout.
If Paul can win a title, he would be able to join his brother Logan Paul, who is the reigning WWE United States champion. Again, that idea is more fantasy than reality–but it would allow Paul to have some fun with the belt, similar to how his older brother has enjoyed wearing WWE gold.
“Logan’s whole naked-with-the-belt thing, that was all him,” said Paul. “I had nothing to do with that. But it’s surreal all we’ve accomplished at such a young age and in a short time. I’ll be working hard to accomplish my dream, too.”
In the most high-profile bout of his career, August enters as a heavy underdog. The 35-year-old has won three in a row, but under far dimmer lights than the beaming spotlight he will encounter this evening.
“I was surprised to get the call,” said August, knowing he was chosen to lose. “That gives me extra motivation.”
Even if it is unlikely to occur, August is determined to play the role of spoiler.
“This is a life-changing moment,” said August. “I’m not good with predictions, but I know there’s going to be fireworks.”
For Paul, victory is a prerequisite to taking the next step in his climb.
“This is a sport I need,” said Paul. “I need the routine, I need the challenge. Boxing pulled me out of a dark place. I feel lost without it.
“This has become my life, and it keeps me locked in. I continue to fall more and more in love with it. I can’t wait for this fight.”
