Garry Tonon-Martin Nguyen Bout Set For ONE 165
ONE 165 has a new fight on the card.
Garry Tonon will match up against Martin Nguyen in a three-round featherweight bout at the highly anticipated ONE 165 card, Sports Illustrated has learned.
The fight, which takes place on January 28 in Japan at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, will help determine the upper echelon of the division.
Tonon (8-1) enters the fight on a two-fight win streak. His most recent fight earned him Performance of the Night honors, defeating previously undefeated Shamil Gasanov in July with a highlight reel kneebar submission. If Tonon defeats Nguyen, then he should be next in line for a title shot.
The first-ever double champion in ONE Championship history, Nguyen (15-6) is a former lightweight champion and featherweight champ. After losing three of his last five, he will look to start his first winning streak in four years.
ONE Championship Returning To Japan
A real clash of styles, the manner in which this plays out will be fascinating. Standup appears to favor Nguyen, while Tonon will have the grappling advantage.
ONE 165 is headlined by the superb Rodtang Jitmuangnon against Takeru Segawa in a flyweight kickboxing bout. The card also features a flyweight MMA bout putting Sage Northcutt against Shinya Aoki.
