Jonathan Haggerty Plans on Bantamweight MMA Debut This Year: ‘My Goal is to Get That Title’
Jonathan Haggerty returns to action tomorrow, defending his Bantamweight Muay Thai world title against Felipe Lobo.
The bout headlines ONE Fight Night 19 on Prime Video, which takes place in Bangkok at Lumpinee Stadium and airs live in primetime in the United States.
This is a chance for Haggerty to further the gap between himself and every other bantamweight in ONE Championship. Initially competing as a flyweight, where he won the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai world title, he has been dominant as a bantamweight.
Currently a two-sport champion as the reigning ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing world champion, Haggerty is seeking a third title: the ONE bantamweight MMA belt.
“Carrying all these belts in my luggage is a bit of a headache,” said a smiling Haggerty. “I’m still looking forward to getting that third title, and maybe I’ll get someone to carry one for me.”
The bantamweight MMA title belongs to Fabrício Andrade, who Haggerty defeated last November in a bantamweight kickboxing title bout. Once the fight with Lobo is finished, Haggerty wants a shot at Andrade’s MMA title.
“My goal is to get that title,” said Haggerty, who wants his MMA debut to be in a title bout. “We’ve been working behind closed doors on takedown defense. When the time comes, we’ll be ready.”
Tomorrow’s fight against Lobo stands as another opportunity for Haggerty to show why he is ONE’s most elite pound-for-pound striker. Once he starts trading with Lobo, the end will be near.
“Many have said they were going to beat me, and many were knocked out,” said Haggerty. “There’s going to be a round-one stoppage. May the best man win.”
