NFL Free Agency: Best Landing Spots for David Montgomery
David Montgomery headlines a short list of premiere running backs expected to hit the NFL's free agency market when the new league year begins in Mid-March. The 25-year-old rusher is coming off a subpar season with the Bears, posting just 891 rushing yards, six total scores and 177.7 fantasy points. That was good enough for him to finish as the RB24.
Montgomery’s rushing yards and touchdowns have declined in three straight years, so a change of scenery could do him well. He’s still in the prime of his career too, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that a new team and offense could mean a push back into the top 20 running backs based on fantasy points moving forward.
Here’s five teams that could have a need at running back and would be interesting spots for Montgomery to land next season.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles could decide to let Miles Sanders, who is coming off a career season, walk as a free agent. That would leave them with a void in their backfield that could be filled by Montgomery. I could argue that he’s a better back than Sanders, and he could be a cheaper option for a team that is slightly over the salary cap at this point in time. The veteran would be in the RB2 conversation in the Eagles elite offense.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins could have a gaping hole in the backfield, as Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., Salvon Ahmed (RFA) and Myles Gaskin are all slated to be free agents. If the team decides to go the free agent route, Montgomery could be an option. Heading into his age-26 season and seeing a projected featured role in a prolific offense, Montgomery’s fantasy draft value would be on the rise in 2023 leagues.
Buffalo Bills
James Cook isn't built to be a full-time featured back, and Devin Singletary is expected to become a free agent. What would happen if the Bills choose Montgomery to be their new main runner? Josh Allen would get more chances in the end zone than him, but Montgomerey would also be in a balanced offense where run defenses couldn't center on him. Montgomery would continue to be a player to watch as a RB2 in all formats.
Carolina Panthers
Given that D'Onta Foreman is expected to leave the Panthers for free agency, the team may be looking for a running back. In an offense that could use additional playmakers, Montgomery might be a choice, working alongside Chuba Hubbard to form a backfield committee. Under new head coach Frank Reich, Carolina will want to run the football, and Montgomery would have a reasonably effective offensive line blocking in front of him.
Detroit Lions
The Lions need a running back to pair with injury prone veteran D’Andre Swift, and Jamaal Williams is headed to free agency. If the team decides not to retain him, Montgomery could be a good backup plan. Their offense scored a ton of points last season, and Williams benefitted with an NFL and franchise-best 17 rushing scores. Montgomery would have flex starter value if he leaves the Bears for the Lions.
