Alex Bregman: 1st Round Pick in Fantasy Baseball Drafts
Coming off his second consecutive season with more than 100 RBI, Astros third baseman Alex Bregman is climbing up fantasy baseball draft boards. In fact, he’s currently the 13th player being drafted and the second third baseman according to the latest Average Draft Position data.
But should he be going even higher? That’s the question Sports Illustrated’s fantasy baseball analyst Shawn Childs answers in the above video.

Corey Parson: Hey, what's up, it's Corey Parson, the fantasy executive here for SI.com. Fantasy baseball could be right around the corner. Now, I know many of you have had your drafting auctions already, but if not, our boy Shawn Childs, SI fantasy and gambling analyst, will help us break down Houston Astros' Alex Bregman. Shawn, last season Bregman had a career year. What do you see of him coming up this season?
Shawn Childs: Yeah, the first thing that stands out with him, he has a great approach. When you're looking for a baseball player that can hit well over 300, it all comes with a guy that can take more walks and strikeouts. So Bregman has that in back to back years and the separation is getting wider, which is making him look like an even higher upside batting average guy. So I look for him to pop, to hit well over 300. His average hit rate last year got exactly two, which is a great number, which is going to support him hitting 40 home runs again. His contact batting average is pretty solid, 348. Especially when he doesn't strike out that much. The only thing he was missing last year is he didn't repeat his steals the two previous years. He had 17 and so he hits in the right kind of lineup. The Astros are a great team and he's going to be productive and he's just, you know, the right kind of guy you want to best invest in in fantasy sports.
Corey Parson: Is the investment worth it though, where's he going at in drafts right now and what's his auction value?
Shawn Childs: His ADP right now is around 17 in drafts after March 1. He's probably the third or fourth shortstop off the board, which is kind of surprising. In these kinds of situations, I value the shorts opposition more than third base. He'd probably be a guy that you're going to spend, you know, close to $40 on plus if you expected him to steal a few more bags. But he's definitely worth the investment and he's going to be a great player.
Corey Parson: All right. Thanks a lot, Shawn. For more news from the majors, make sure you keep it locked right here at SI.com.
