Inside Tiger Woods’ putter switch at 2020 PGA Championship
On the surface, the difference between the Scotty Cameron putter that Tiger Woods has used in the past and what he is playing at this week's PGA Championship may appear superficial. For example, the old one features the maker's name across the backside's bottom; the new putter has Woods' name.
On Tuesday, Woods was seen practicing with a new Scotty Cameron putter in preparation for the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park. The putter is reportedly similar to his trusty Cameron Newport 2 GSS and was made for him to test last summer at the British Open.
In Thursday's opening round, according to ESPN commentator Curtis Strange, Woods made it official and put the new putter in his bag.
The difference in the Cameron Newport 2 GSS that Woods used to win 14 of his 15 major titles and the prototype are adjustable weights in the heel and toe, and a bit more length. The weight adjustability allows Woods to make changes based on the speed of the greens, which are not expected to be overly fast at TPC Harding Park this week..
Woods has not played enough competitive rounds (16) during the 2019-2020 season to be eligible for any of the PGA Tour's statistical categories. However, his 28.94 putts per round average and his 1.608 overall putting average would rank 112th and 110th, respectively.
