In a new world of designated events on the PGA Tour, the longtime World Golf Championships appear to be on their way out.

Austin Country Club is hosting the match play for the last time and if the format does continue next year at another course it almost certainly won't be under the WGC banner.

So consider this week the end of an era, with 64 of the Tour's best gathering for the unique event. It's not quite March Madness anymore, with a round-robin pod system that feeds into a 16-player single-elimination bracket. It also begins Wednesday, so adjust your golf clocks accordingly.

A total of 26 of the world's top 30 (also 26 of top 30 SIWGR) are in the field, with only Justin Thomas not playing among those eligible.

Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion and coming off a win at the Players Championship that put him back atop the world rankings. Billy Horschel, Kevin Kisner, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy are among past champions in the field.

The event also features an elevated $20 million purse.
