Actual Golf on Stage Again, How the New Structure Was Born and Selling No-Cut Events

Once the balls were in the air (and in the water) at the Players Championship, the game was all that mattered.

Another Players Championship is in the books, and once again TPC Sawgrass delivered agony, history and a worthy champion.

The 17th hole had a crazy number of aces and Tyrrell Hatton torched the back nine like no one else ever had on Sunday, but once the dust settled a familiar face stood alone. Scottie Scheffler has now won six times in 13 months, owns the No. 1 ranking again and is looking like he did a year ago—and you know how he peaked in April.

Bob Harig reviews how great it was to get back to golf at the Players and much more in his Weekly Read.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of Players week, all the talk was about money and events and limited fields and, well, seemingly everything but the massive event starting on Thursday. Designated events have been the talk of the Tour since a meeting last year in Delaware, where top players plotted their vision of a star-driven Tour. That vision was honed more for 2024 before the Players, and there are still doubters as Bob Harig writes. Don't expect that to change anytime soon.

The PGA Tour has had no-cut events forever. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus even won a few—but not nearly as many as the Tour said this week. Bob Harig digs deeper into what he called an "odd flex" while explaining how the Tour is trying to sell the events to players and fans.

Tom Hoge finished T3 at the Players with a very low round and a very high round, and Bob Harig notes how rare that is along with other nuggets in his weekly Fore! Things. On a related note, we're not betting against next year's Senior Players champion to miss the cut at TPC Sawgrass.
