Bubba Watson Says Ex-Caddie Ted Scott is Scottie Scheffler’s Secret Weapon
TUCSON, Ariz. – Today Ted Scott is the hottest caddie on the planet. He loops for Scottie Scheffler, the hottest player on the planet.
Scott and Scheffler paired up in the fall of 2021. Since then, Scheffler has won six times and banked over $30 million in bonuses and earnings.
But during Scott’s formative years, he partnered with Bubba Watson. Scott was on the bag for Bubba for 10 wins and two major titles over the course of 15 years. It’s a full career for most, and for the team of Scott and Watson, it was a dream come true.
When Scott approached Watson in 2021 to discuss their future as a team, Watson knew he was not physically where he needed to be. When Scott told him he needed 10 more years of earnings before he retired, Watson knew that would never happen.
In a tweet saying goodbye, Watson explained the joint decision process.
“After 15 incredible years together, Teddy and I have decided to end our on-course partnership. We recently came to the decision after some deep talks, not only about golf but life. When we met, I don’t think we ever imagined how much we would experience together.
Teddy deserves more credit that anyone can imagine for our success on the golf course, but I am just as grateful for his friendship and the way he has helped me grow as a person.”
That was Watson in September of 2021. By November Scott and Scheffler had teamed up. Today, Watson’s not surprised by the success the two are having.
“Man, what a great man,” Watson said of Scott this week in Tucson. “He's getting to pour into Scottie Scheffler as much as he poured into me. Scottie might have more talent, so he probably didn't pour as much as he poured into me. But for what he did for me and my family, his help, his guidance.”
Watson marvels at what Scott and Scheffler have accomplished on the course, but friendship and support off the course is what sustained Watson and Scott’s relationship, and most likely remains true today for Scott and Scheffler.
“I still talk to him on a regular basis. It seems like a regular basis because Scottie’s up on the board every week,” Watson joked. “Forget the golf side of it. What he poured into me as a man is really the most important.”
Watson almost paints Scott as a caddie deity. Scheffler was a good player to begin with, and while Scott’s knowledge and management skills must help Scheffler, as always, the player hits the shots.
But Watson remains quite deferential to Scott.
“You have a talented player (in Scheffler) and Teddy did get him over the edge or something clicked,” Watson said. “You get enough bad swings. You're like, I'm not trying to make a bad swing. So now I'm going to make good swing. And obviously, Teddy said, hey, man, quit making these mistakes or quit doing this and think this way. Or this is the way we thought when we played this hole, or this is the way we played this tournament. Maybe that helps.”
Watson says he doesn’t want to toot Teddy's horn too much, even though he's phenomenal at what he does, but then he can’t help himself from effusing more praise.
“I think Teddy's focused on more on Scottie’s life. Now, don't get me wrong, Scottie is focused on golf and all that,” Watson said. “But there's other things that help. If your life is balanced, golf going to be more balanced.”
