Announced: By Tiger Woods, that he will play in the Zozo Championship, the PGA Tour’s first official event in Japan. The Oct. 24-27 tournament, a 78-man, no-cut event with a $9.75 million purse, will be held at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Inzai, just east of Tokyo. It will be the first competition in Japan for Woods since 2006, when he lost a playoff to Padraig Harrington in the Dunlop Phoenix. Woods, 43, is expected to announce by today that he will play in the Quail Hollow Championship next week in Charlotte, N.C., which would be his tuneup for the PGA Championship on May 16-19. Woods won the recent Masters, his first major championship in 11 years and his 15th overall, for his 81st career title on the PGA Tour.

Named: Northwestern’s Ryan Lumsden, as winner of the Byron Nelson Award. The award goes to a graduating senior on the merits of on-course performance, academics, character, integrity and citizenship. Lumsden, a senior economics major from London, is a two-time All-Big Ten Conference player and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten. He owns two career victories, including this season’s Marquette Intercollegiate. He brings a 72.53 stroke average into the Big Ten Championships, which begins today at Philadelphia Cricket Club.
