Georgia Tech’s Golf Team Pulls In QB From Football Team to Play in Prestigious Event

A freshman quarterback on the Georgia Tech football team will make his first competitive start for the Yellow Jackets this week ... at one of the most famous golf courses in the world?

That’s right—Colson Brown, a non-scholarship QB at Georgia Tech, has been added to the golf team roster this week to fill in for a redshirt junior.

The unique situation came about because Georgia Tech is playing in two separate and simultaneous golf events this week. The top half of the squad is at the East Lake Cup in Georgia, while the remaining players will fly to the Cypress Point Classic in Pebble Beach, Calif. The latter tournament is hosted at the one and only Cypress Point, which is consistently ranked as one of the top three courses in the country alongside the likes of Augusta National and Pine Valley.

Here’s where Brown comes in: The team needs a total of 11 players to be eligible for both events, but junior Benjamin Reuter of The Netherlands is out for the 2023-24. That’s why Brown, who played high school golf at North Augusta High School in South Carolina, appears to have generously switched sports for the week to help out the golf program.

Well, we wouldn’t say he’s making much of a sacrifice. Brown will get an all-expenses-paid trip to a bucket-list course for any golf fanatic, and he can say he’s been a part of multiple Georgia Tech athletic teams. That’ll be a nice addition to the resume.

The East Lake Cup features the semifinalists from the previous season’s NCAA championships on both the men’s and women’s side. Christo Lamprecht, the 6-foot-8 22-year-old who stunned at this summer’s British Open, is the program’s star player. The event will be broadcast on Golf Channel.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech’s B-team and its quarterback substitute will tee it up on the coast of Northern California on Monday and Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets won the Cypress Point Classic back in 2019, and thanks to Brown, they’ll have the chance to do it again this year.
