Jon Rahm officially signed with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf in December, but it appears that he is in town for the first PGA Tour event of the season in Maui, Hawaii, anyway. Wait ... what?

According to reports from both the Associated Press and Golf Magazine, sources have confirmed that the defending champion of The Sentry—who is now banned from actually competing to defend his title—is vacationing in the area with his family.

In 2023, Rahm came from behind to beat Collin Morikawa at Kapalua’s Planation Course, which hosts the first PGA Tour event of the calendar year. He went on to win four times last year, including at the Masters

According to the AP’s Doug Ferguson, Rahm is believed to be staying at a top-of-the-line resort up the coast from Kapalua in Makena. A few PGA Tour players have even bumped into the Spaniard this week.

Rahm’s presence—or lack thereof—at Kapalua is just another reminder of the strangeness of this moment in the professional golf landscape.

LIV and the PGA Tour are set to operate as planned for the 2024 season, but both parties are still working towards a finalized agreement to merge into one for-profit company. The deadline to complete that deal has been extended, and evidently, players are still being poached by LIV Golf.

Whether Rahm couldn’t cancel his 2024 Maui reservations or simply picked the vacation destination without worrying about potentially awkward run-ins, we hope he’s enjoying his new extended offseason.
