Justin Thomas had eight holes remaining in his second round at Augusta National when the tournament was called for the day on Friday afternoon due to inclement weather. He stood at 2-under at the time, 10 strokes behind the leader, Brooks Koepka

On Saturday morning, play resumed in a heavy rainstorm, and hole by hole, Thomas’s name only plummeted down the leaderboard.

A double on the 11th and four bogeys coming in put Thomas dangerously close to the cut line—so close that he found himself with a putt to make the weekend at the Masters on the 18th green. On the damp putting surface, Thomas was left with a 15-footer for a chance to stay alive at Augusta.

Thomas missed the putt. His ball didn’t even graze the cup, meaning the two-time major champion would miss his first cut at the Masters in eight appearances.

Earlier in the round, Thomas even agreed to be mic’d up by the CBS broadcast. He didn’t hold back when describing the miserable course conditions. When CBS’s Andrew Catalon asked Thomas to describe the challenges of playing in such unpleasant conditions, the Alabama alum joked, “How long do you guys have?”

The photos of Thomas following the unfortunate stretch of golf tell you everything you need to know about how dejected he must have felt in that moment. Thomas’s caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, looked equally emotionless after the shocking finish.

Here are six telling images from the scene on 18.
