The LPGA Mic’d Up Mel Reid and She Was Fantastic
The new walk-and-talk style interview that has quickly become a weekly staple on the PGA Tour has landed on the LPGA, and the first participant—England’s Mel Reid—was absolutely perfect for the job.
Although the LPGA has experimented with mid-round interviews since 2020, Reid was the first to try out the newest technology that allows broadcasters to communicate with players through an Apple AirPod.
Reid, who has won once on the LPGA Tour and six times on the Ladies European Tour, spoke to Golf Channel announcers on Wednesday during the first round of the Lotte Championship in Hawai’i.
While mic’d up, Reid not only revealed her strategy for navigating Hoakalei Country Club, but she also shared a few hilarious anecdotes about her wife, Carly, who has been tasked with caddying for Reid several times throughout her career.
Despite being married to one of the best female golfers in the world, Carly isn’t necessarily an expert when it comes to her wife’s profession. Reid shared that at last year’s ShopRite LPGA Classic, Carly took an accidental dig at her in the middle of the tournament.
“The funniest was at ShopRite, I hit a horrendous shot on a par-3 and she actually asked 'Is this a par-4?’ That's how bad the shot was," Reid said.
“I was like, ‘Uh, you need to back off now a bit from me, please.”
While playing the Lotte Championship’s Aon Risk Reward Challenge hole, Reid continued to chat to Golf Channel broadcasters, who asked what she would do with the $1 million prize awarded to the winner of the season-long challenge.
“I know even if I won it anyway, Carly would take it and probably put it in a savings account, she likes to do things like that,” Reid said. “So it wouldn’t even be my money anyway.”
Jokes aside, Reid was a thoroughly entertaining choice for the new live segment, and we can’t wait to see if other LPGA players choose to participate in future events.
