Followers of college golf know the name Ludvig Aberg. The Swede won the prestigious Ben Hogan Award in 2022 and he’s now the No. 1 amateur in the world. Throughout his four years at Texas Tech, he has recorded four individual wins, and coming into the spring of 2023, he had posted 40 rounds of 69 or better.

Now that Aberg is approaching the end of his senior season, however, his name recognition is set to expand far beyond the college golf community.

Aberg currently tops the PGA Tour University ranking and this year, the No. 1 player in those standings by the end of the NCAA D-I National Championship will earn PGA Tour membership through the end of the 2023 season.

With a points average of 1298.9, Aberg stands in a strong position to maintain that top spot and gain access to the program’s new perks. Florida’s Fred Biondi sits behind Aberg with 1105.1 points and Sam Bennett, the amateur who made history at the Masters, comes in at No. 5 on the rankings, with 1085.

Aberg’s recent dominant victory at the Big 12 championship will only help him maintain his position.

The 23-year-old shot rounds of 67-66-63-69 at Prairie Dunes Country Club to win the individual title for the second year in a row by a stunning eight shots.

He also shattered the tournament’s scoring record in relation to par. With a 15-under total of 265, Aberg beat the previous record by six shots. It was last set in 2008 by none other than Rickie Fowler, who played his college golf at Oklahoma State University.

Born in the province of Skane, Sweden, Aberg grew up playing golf at Eslov Golf Club. Since enrolling at Texas Tech, Aberg has improved his World Amateur Golf Ranking from No. 37 to No. 1.

This year, Aberg has already teed it up in two PGA Tour events, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Valspar Championship, through both a sponsors exemption and a win at the Valspar Collegiate. He made the cut at both events, carding a T61 finish at Innisbrook and an impressive T24 at Bay Hill.

If Aberg remains at the top of the PGA Tour University rankings and continues to capitalize on his Tour starts, the summer of 2023 would be the launchpad for his professional career.
