The LIV Golf League’s free agency period began Thursday, as players who finished among the top 24 in the final league individual standings who chose not to stay with their existing teams can negotiate another deal, while those who finished outside of the top 24 and are not under contract face the possibility of not being brought back to the league.

What remains unclear is how many players not associated with LIV Golf in 2023 might sign on with the league for the 2024 season, which is expected to begin in February.

Pat Perez of the 4Aces, Graeme McDowell and Bernd Wiesberger of the Cleeks, Carlos Ortiz of the Fireballs, Matt Jones of Ripper GC and David Puig of Torque GC are looking for new deals. Ortiz is the only player in that group who finished among the top 24 and is guaranteed a spot and he elected not to resign with the Fireballs.

LIV Golf announced that Matt Wolff remains under contract and with Smash GC, where he had a highly-publicized falling out with captain Brooks Koepka during this season. It is possible that Wolff could be traded over the free agency period or during a mid-season period when such moves will be allowed..

Free agency will conclude when only four roster spots remain. Those are to be filled by Andy Ogletree, who won the International Series Order of Merit, as well as three players to emerge from LIV Golf’s Promotions Event to be staged in Abu Dhabi, Dec. 8-10.

LIV Golf announced where all 12 teams stand.

4Aces: Captain Dustin Johnson. Patrick Reed and Peter Uihlein will return. Johnson can resign Perez or look to add another player.

Cleeks: Captain Martin Kaymer. Richard Bland will return. Kaymer can resign Wiesberger, McDowell or both or look to add one or two more players.

Crushers: Captain Bryson DeChambeau. The 2023 team champions will return intact. Anirban Lahiri, whose contract was up, elected to resign with the team. Charles Howell III and Paul Casey will also be back

Fireballs: Captain Sergio Garcia. With Ortiz’s departure, Garcia has one open spot. Abraham Ancer and Eugenio Chacarra will be back.

HyFlyers: Captain Phil Mickelson. James Piot was relegated because he finished outside of the top 44 players, meaning Mickelson has one spot to fill. Cameron Tringale and Brendan Steele will return.

IronHeads: Captain Kevin Na. Siwhan Kim was relegated, meaning Na has one open spot. Scott Vincent and Danny Lee return.

Majesticks: Co-captains Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson return, along with Sam Horsfield.

RangeGoats: Captain Bubba Watson. Second-place overall, Watson has returning league champion Talor Gooch, as well as Harold Varner III and Thomas Pieters also coming back.

Ripper: Captain Cam Smith. Jed Morgan was relegated and Jones is a free agent who can be resigned. That means Smith has at least one opening and possibly two if he wants to replace Jones. Marc Leishman will return.

Smash: Captain Brooks Koepka. Chase Koepka has been relegated, so his brother will look to replace him, with Jason Kokrak and Wolff back for another season.

Stinger: Captain Louis Oosthuizen. Branden Grace, Dean Burmester and Charl Schwartzel return to the all-South African team.

Torque: Captain Joaquin Niemann. Puig is a free agent, meaning Niemann has one spot to fill. Mito Pereira and Sebastian Munoz will be back.
