Rickie Fowler Shoots a 60 to Get Into Contention at Travelers Championship
Rickie Fowler may not have secured the U.S. Open last week, but he did keep up his scorching hot level of play this weekend. Entering the third round of the Travelers Championship at 5-under, Fowler went out on Saturday and shot a 10-under 60 on the day, carding the lowest round of his PGA Tour career.
After starting on the back nine, Fowler entered the final four holes of the front nine needing to go three-under for the 60, and he proceeded to chip-in for eagle on six before making birdie on No. 8. However, with a chance to shoot a 59, he had to settle for a par on No. 9 after narrowly missing his approach wide-right.
On the round, Fowler was bogey-free while securing eight birdies and an eagle, which included a stretch of four straight birdies and seven birdies in nine holes.
After the round, Fowler said that he realized he had a shot at shooting a 59 halfway through his round.
“After birdieing 18 I knew I could potentially get six on the front, and especially after birdieing 1 and 2, my 10th and 11th [holes],” he said. “You know, 7-under through 11 is a pretty good spot to be in.”
This marks the second straight week that Fowler put up such a low number, following his record-breaking 62 in the first round of the U.S. Open last week. However, even after Saturday’s 60, Fowler went into the clubhouse in a tie for third place on the Travelers leaderboard.Â
The 34 year-old mentioned that there isn’t anything specific that has led to his recent success, just continuing to work on a few things with his team.
“A lot of that was exaggerating a few things to get myself in a better position on take way and at the top of the swing,” he said. “So couple that with starting to make more putts, finally been able to kind of build some momentum and confidence over the last eight to ten months.”
