Rose Zhang Just Tied an Incredible Stanford Record Shared By Tiger Woods
If it feels like Rose Zhang’s name is gracing the headlines of golf publications for setting a new record every week she tees it up, it’s because she’s doing exactly that.
The 19-year-old Stanford sophomore’s most recent feat occurred at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., the site of the NCAA D-I Pullman Regional. First, Zhang led the Cardinal to victory in the tournament as a team, putting them in the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship.
Zhang also won the individual title at the regional, shooting a three-round total of 19 under, with scores of 64, 68 and 65. Her tournament total was four strokes clear of her Stanford teammate Sadie Englemann, who finished in solo second place.
Here come the records: Zhang’s score of 19 under set the record for the best 54-hole score in program history. It was also three strokes better than any player’s score in an NCAA Regional.
Zhang’s victory in Washington was also her 11th win as a Stanford golfer, putting her in the same category as the 15-time major champion, Tiger Woods.
The Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion has won 11 times in just 19 starts. Woods won 11 times in 26 events—a resume that was already impossible to fathom.
The school's win record is also shared by PGA Tour Stanford alums Patrick Rodgers and Maverick McNealy, who won 11 times in 35 and 45 events, respectively.
In April, Zhang won the ANWA in a playoff against Jenny Bae. The victory capped off a trio of prestigious titles, along with her wins at the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Girls Junior.
