Fore! Things

1. Former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover’s victory at the Wyndham Championship was his fifth career win on the PGA Tour and moved him from well outside of qualifying for the FedEx Cup playoffs at 112th to 49th, meaning he’s in excellent shape to now qualify for the BMW Championship.

2. At age 43, Glover is the oldest player to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson won the PGA Championship at age 50 in 2021.

3. It was a bittersweet day for Justin Thomas and Adam Scott, both of whom had solid rounds in what turned out to be their last ones of the 2022-23 season. Scott’s 63 moved him to 72nd in the FedEx Cup standings. Thomas's 68 meant a tie for 12th and had he been one shot better for the tournament, he would have made it into the playoffs. He finished in 71st, just eight points behind No. 70 Ben Griffin.

4. Bryson DeChambeau won for the first time on the LIV Golf Tour—his first pro win since the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational— and did so with a 12-under-par 58 at the Greenbrier in West Virginia. DeChambeau made 13 birdies and a bogey.

Fore! More Things

1. According to LIV Golf stats, DeChambeau had eight drives of 340 yards or more on Sunday, including a 392-yarder at the 2nd hole and one of 359 yards at the 17th. Of his holed putts, just one was outside of 20 feet—the 40-footer he made at 18 to get to 12 under for his round.

2. Should DeChambeau be picked for the U.S. Ryder Cup team? If he can drive it that well, DeChambeau could be a huge asset. Aside from his LIV results, he did tie for fourth at the PGA and 10th at the U.S. Open before a lackluster (T60) at the British Open. He’s got another event this week for LIV Golf at Bedminster to make his case.

3. Then there’s Thomas, who now has made the task of captain Zach Johnson very difficult. There’s numerous reasons to pick Thomas based on past history, including a strong record as a partner with Jordan Spieth as well as a 4-1 record the last time the U.S. played a Ryder Cup on the road. But do you pick someone who missed the cut in three majors as well as the FedEx Cup playoffs? This would show Johnson something: go to the DP World Tour event in Northern Ireland in two weeks, same week as the BMW Championship.

4. There are 17 days until the first round of the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship. And it is 53 days until the first session of the Ryder Cup in Italy.
