1. Lucas Glover’s playoff victory over Patrick Cantlay at the FedEx St. Jude Championship was his second in consecutive weeks and has seen him vault from outside of the playoffs to fourth. He’s now a lock for the Tour Championship and is in position to win the overall title.
2. Glover became the first player age 40 or older to win consecutive tournaments since Vijay Singh did it in 2008 at age 45.
3. The top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings following the FedEx St. Jude advance to the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club. Not only is it an opportunity to qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship for the top 30, but those top 50 are assured of being eligible for each of the eight "Signature Events" on the PGA Tour schedule in 2024. Hideki Matsuyama and Cam Davis moved into the top 50 to qualify for the BMW and the Signature events; Mackenzie Hughes and Nick Hardy dropped out.
4. Cam Smith’s victory at the LIV Golf Bedminster event was his second of the year and third over two seasons. He won last year’s Chicago tournament and last month in London. He tied Talor Gooch for the most victories in LIV’s brief existence with three.
Fore! More Things
1. Matt Kuchar said it’s not exactly the kind of accomplishment you aspire to nor one you think about. But Kuchar, 43, made the FedEx Cup playoffs for the 17th consecutive year—every year of its existence. He is the only player to have accomplished that feat, one that is more difficult now since only the top 70 in points make the playoffs. Kuchar made it to the FedEx St. Jude at 60th but did not play well enough to advance.
2. Olympia Fields is the site of this week’s BMW Championship and it is where Jon Rahm won in a playoff over Dustin Johnson in 2020. The event was played with no spectators due to COVID-19 and it’s the first return to Chicago for the BMW since that tournament. It won’t be back in the Chicago area until 2027 as the tournament goes to Castle Pines in Colorado next year and Caves Valley in Maryland in 2025. The 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah prevents a return to Chicago in 2026.
3. LIV Golf now takes a month break after consecutive events. It will be in the Chicago area for an event at Rich Harvest Farms, where Cam Smith won last year.
4. There are 10 days until the first round of the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship. And it is 46 days until the first session of the Ryder Cup in Italy.
