Picks to win, sleepers and value bets for Valero Texas Open
This week, the "Gaming Golf Podcast" recaps the WGC Match Play and previews the Texas Open in San Antonio.
What did the hosts take away from the event? For this week's Tour stop, not much, but for the U.S. Ryder Cup team, Scottie Scheffler and Billy Horschel now must squarely be on captain Steve Stricker’s short list. And on the European side, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia showed their best match-playing days may not be done yet. Both could land on the upcoming European team.
TPC San Antonio is a tough, par-72 course. Canada’s Corey Conners won the event in 2019 (it was cancelled last year) and returns as the defending champ. The hosts – RotoWire’s Jeff Erickson and Scott Jenstad, and Morning Read’s Jeff Ritter – discuss this event’s place on the schedule, and the type of player profile on whom they look to bet. They agree that the “desperate golfer” who has entered this event as a last-ditch attempt to get into the Masters is one to steer away from. (Sorry, Rickie Fowler.) They select a group of favorites and sleepers, and each lands a different pick to win this week: Erickson is going with Ryan Palmer, Ritter takes San Antonio resident Abraham Ancer and Jenstad likes Corey Conners to repeat.
