Variety is the spice of The Cliffs
For some golfers, playing the same course day after day can become monotonous.
And while many may not seem to mind, for others the repetition can seem like a scene straight out of the movie “Groundhog Day.” But imagine buying into a private community with a little more variety. One such property is The Cliffs.
Actually, The Cliffs is a bit more than a singular property. It’s seven, to be exact.
Located in South Carolina’s rolling upstate and originally established in 1991 as the brainchild of local real estate developer Jim Anthony, The Cliffs was recognized early as one the South’s emerging private communities. And as the legend grew, the master-planned communities expanded, houses were built and golf courses were opened.
Eventually acquired by Arendale Holdings in 2013, The Cliffs offer an exceptional array of communities spread across three distinct regions nestled along the Blue Ridge Mountains — the lake, the mountain and Asheville, N.C.

Along the shores of Lake Keowee in the upper left corner of South Carolina, the lake region features clear waters and breathtaking views. Here, it’s all about lake life and Keowee’s 300-mile shoreline offers ample opportunities to explore. The Cliffs’ offers three communities: Keowee Vineyards, Keowee Falls and Keowee Springs.
The Cliffs’ mountain region stretches north of Greenville, S.C., and makes the most of one of America’s most talked about cities. Greenville boasts a thriving downtown, vibrant city parks and plenty of outdoor activities. While home to Furman University, Clemson University is less than an hour away. The Cliffs communities are Glassy, Valley and Mountain Park.
Farther north, the Asheville region boasts the very best of western North Carolina. Artsy and eclectic, Asheville has quickly hit the scene as a home for avant-garde chefs and some of the finest breweries in the country. The Cliffs’ Walnut Cove represents the city’s only private gated golf community.

Within each of The Cliffs’ regions and seven communities, one thing is clear – there’s never a shortage of things to do. Nationally-ranked golf courses, wellness facilities, tennis, hiking trails, a marina and a variety of casual and fine dining opportunities make The Cliffs a viable property for those who love their options.
“If you go to any of The Cliffs’ properties you’ll see there’s something very, very special about each one,” member Rick Guthy told The Cliffs.
There’s only one membership needed to experience it all.
Upon purchasing property, buyers at The Cliffs are given the opportunity to become members. There are three levels of membership: golf, sports and active. Each gives members access and ability to pursue their interests across all seven communities.
For golfers, the best part is being able to play a different golf course each day of the week.
“The Cliffs is a Disneyland for golfers,” member Ben Whipple told The Cliffs. “You have seven golf courses, five different architects, different grasses, different elevations. For a golfer, it’s just the place to be.”
Golf course designers include Tom Jackson, Gary Player, Ben Wright, Tom Fazio and Jack Nicklaus. For variety, The Cliffs is simply hard to beat. Between the designers, their signature characteristics and the varying terrain, golf here is anything but boring.
