Kiawah Island is best known for the resort that bears the island's name and features the Ocean Course, which is hosting its second PGA Championship in 2021 and also hosted the 1999 Ryder Cup.
The island also includes the Kiawah Island Club, a private-membership club that offers a wide variety of amenities and two 18-hole golf courses — The River Course designed by Tom Fazio and Cassique designed by Tom Watson.
The Tom Fazio-designed River Course opened as Kiawah's first private golf course in 1995. The 7,039-yard course plays to par 72 and features eight holes that route around Bass Pond and the Kiawah River. Forests, marsh savannas and ponds complement the design. The par-5 eighth is one of the course's more iconic holes with water all down the fairway's right side.
The River Course has a certain rhythm to its design. The outward and inward nines begin amid the maritime forests then open up to reveal the best of Lowcountry habitats.
The River Course's 17th hole plays toward the Kiawah River and offers exquisite vistas of the inner coastal land.
In addition to the River and Cassique courses and their respective clubhouses, the list of structural amenities includes the Beach Club (shown), the Marsh House, an indoor-outdoor gathering spot with an infinity pool, and the Sasanqua Spa. The Kiawah Club also offers a variety of top-tier dining and sporting options, aside from golf.
Cassique was designed by five-time British Open champion Tom Watson, who drew upon his passion for links-style golf in creating the course that opened in 2000. The fifth hole is considered one of the island's most scenic.
Cassique was reportedly designed from old farm fields that were along the tidal marshes. While the outward nine (including the seventh, shown) is a more open layout, the inward nine is buffered more by the maritime forest.
The par-5 15th hole is designed with a waste bunker and trees on the left, and water on the right. And expect there to be wind of some form, as well. Because of the varied winds that can arise around the course, Watson created a design that allows golfers to play more bump-and-run shots into the greens.
