Huntsville tops SBLive's first computer rankings of the 2023-24 boys basketball season

With the holiday tournaments over and league play beginning around the state, it’s time to release SBLive’s first computer rankings of the 2023-24 Alabama high school boys basketball season.

Huntsville (20-1) earned the top spot in the initial statewide rankings, powered by a 17-game winning streak and a 16-0 record against teams currently ranked inside the state’s top 100 teams.

Buckhorn (16-4) came in at No. 1 in the Class 6A rankings, while Fairfield (15-2) earned the top spot in the Class 5A rankings.

SBLive’s computer rankings formula was created using its own linear algebra-based ranking algorithm inspired by the Colley Bias-Free Ranking Method. Colley’s Method was created by Wes Coley, Ph.D., an astrophysicist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He devised his algorithm in order to help address the subjectivity and controversy regarding BCS college football selections in the 1990s and early 2000s, using a method that used no subjective variables.
