Auburn holds off Opelica, wins 99th meeting between Alabama rivals

Joshua Askew's four quarter TD and Alex Gamston's interception seal the victory for the Tigers

1ST QUARTER

After attempting to go for it on fourth down from their own 40, Auburn fails to capitalize and Opelika takes over with excellent field position. The Opelika drive stalls after they got it to the Auburn 30-yard line. The Bulldogs attempted to draw Auburn offsides, but the Tigers defense stayed disciplined. The Bulldogs proceeded to punt it for a touchback as Auburn takes over for their second possession of the game.

TOUCHDOWN! Omar Mabson breaks free down the sideline as he scores a 59-yard rushing touchdown to give Auburn the quick 7-0 lead.

2ND QUARTER

Early in the second quarter, both teams are starting to get penalized in a physical game. It appears whoever stays the most disciplined team will win. Auburn quarterback, Jackson Kilgore, scrambles for the first down on 4th and 4. However, a holding call brings the Tigers back on the next play to set up 1st and 20. After a key pick up to keep the drive going, Kilgore throws his first interception of the season.

TOUCHDOWN! The interception turned out to be costly as Opelika had a long, methodical drive as they finally punched it for a touchdown to tie the game up.

Charlie Ward of Auburn takes the pitch on the outside as he does his best balancing act down the sideline as he scores his third touchdown of the season. That was all the action of the first half as Auburn takes a touchdown lead into the half.

3RD QUARTER

TOUCHDOWN! Calvin Hughley gets the drive going for Opelika as he takes the handoff to Auburn's 31-yard line on the first play. He then scores on the following play on a 31-yard rushing touchdown as Opelika ties it up.

On Auburn's first drive of the half that looked to have some momentum, the Tigers stalled and were flagged for intentional grounding on third down. The Tigers special teams were able to pin them deep with a punt as Opelika takes over inside their own 15-yard line.

After an impressive, opening drive from Opelika, both offenses have not been able to muster anything as each defense continues to impose their will. Opelika will punt with 3:57 left in the third. At the end of 3, both defense have continued to dominate as they enter the fourth tied 14-14.

4TH QUARTER

Opelika starts the fourth with another long touchdown drive as the quarterback rolls out to his left to find his receiver in the back of the end zone.

We are in for an exciting finish as Kilgore finds Joshua Askew on a deep post route as he takes it down inside the 5-yard line. Two plays later, Mabson scores his second touchdown of the game.

TOUCHDOWN! After making a crucial big-play catch on the previous drive, Askew delivers again with a touchdown to give Auburn the lead 28-21.

INTERCEPTION! Auburn might have clinched the victory with 1:42 left as Alex Gamston intercepts the Bulldogs in one of the biggest plays of the game.

Auburn wins this 99th meeting 28-21 over their cross-town rivals in Opelika. They improve to 3-0 on the season and Opelika drops to 2-1.
