According to a tweet from Aaron Burgin of Fulltimehoops.com, the Coronado Unified School District voted to fire boys basketball coach JD Laaperi during an emergency meeting on Tuesday night.

The news comes three days after the Islanders were involved in a postgame game incident following their 4-A Southern California regional championship win over Orange Glen. Laaperi appeared on video shouting expletives towards the Orange Glen coaches while his team was celebrating their buzzer-beating shot. Shortly after, at least two members of the Coronado team were shown tossing tortillas in the direction of the Orange Glen team. As of the 2017-18 school year, Orange Glen listed 87% of their enrollment as Hispanic.

Laaperi had served as Coronado's head coach since 2009 and captured his first CIF San Diego Section Championship earlier this month.
