THIS WEEK’S CALIFORNIA COACH OF THE WEEK NOMINEES:
Jim Bittner, Rio Mesa: Led Rio Mesa to a 24-7 upset win over Pacifica Oxnard. The Spartans are currently in a three way tie for the top spot in the Channel League with a 5-1 record.
Patrick Bugg, Christian-El Cajon: Coached Christian to 21-20 win over the previous No. 10 team in the San Diego Section, Mira Mesa. The Patriots are 2-0 in the Eastern League with two games left.
Mark Cooley, Pleasant Valley-Chico: Helped keep his team focused during a 28-14 win over arch-rival Chico in the annual Almond Bowl, which shuts down the city of Chico every year. Pleasant Valley trailed 14-0 but scored four unanswered touchdowns to win the game going away and to even the series at 25-25-1.
Tony Corley, San Pasqual-Escondido: Led the Golden Eagles to a 20-7 win over league rival Ramona after being shutout by Ramona in each of the past two seasons.
Jon Ellinghouse, Sierra Canyon: Went on the road and beat a Serra team many picked to win the Mission League this season.
Antoine Evans, Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco: In a huge rivalry game — The Bruce-Mahoney Game — before 10,000 fans at Kezar Stadium, the first-year head coach led the Irish to a 10-0 win over St. Ignatius. Evans was heard calling out most of St. Ignatius' plays before the snap as the Irish recorded their first shutout in the series since 1987.
Dominic Farrar, Charter Oak-Covina: Charter Oak went on the road and beat a good Ayala team 32-29 to move to 1-0 in the Mountain West League.
Mason Hughes, Central Valley Christian-Visalia: The 14th-year head coach led the Cavaliers to their eighth straight win in a 27-26 victory at previously unbeaten Kingsburg. CVC reached the state 4-AA title game last season.
Chad Johnson, Mission Viejo: In back to back years, Johnson's led Mission Viejo to wins over rival San Clemente. The Diablos beat the Tritons 49-14 last week.
David Machuca, Chaminade-West Hills: For the first time in school history, Chaminade won on the road at Bishop Amat last week 36-29.
Kevin Macy, Campolindo-Moraga: The 65-year-old coach, in his 27th as head coach for the Cougars, led his team to a 27-24 win over Acalanes-Lafayette, in a battle of 6-0 teams. Macy has led the Cougars to six North Coast Section crowns, the most unlikely last season, two NorCal and one state crown.
Danny Sullivan, Archbishop Mitty-San Jose: Mitty's remarkable turnaround season continued with a 31-17 win over arch-rival Bellarmine at San Jose City College. Mitty improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in West Catholic Athletic League play after going 1-9 last season.
