Stout Serra defense holds De La Salle to 122 yards, records first shutout versus Spartans since 2005, uses 99-yard drive to win second straight

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Both teams preached physicality and intensity after less-than-desirable Week 1 results.

Both teams delivered big hits and stout defense, but host Serra, Northern California's top-ranked team according to SBLive/Sports Illustrated, had a little more in a 28-0 win over rival De La Salle.

It was the second straight win for the Padres (2-0) over the Spartans (0-2), who managed just 122 of total offense.

Offensively, the Padres got 247 yards passing from Maealiuaki Smith, seven catches for 122 yards by tight end Cole Harrison, two field goals from Thomas Gooch and a 60-yard pick 6 from Jermaine Barrett.

But ultimately it was a 99-yard drive to close out the second period that proved decisive. The 8-0 lead stood up until the fourth quarter, when the Padres struck for a 20-point flurry to end things on a high note, a week after giving up two late touchdowns to Folsom in a 21-14 win.
