FOLSOM, CALIFORNIA — The De La Salle-Folsom Northern California rivalry took a step backward on Friday night and no one was really complaining.
It was smashmouth football at its hardest. De La Salle piled up nearly 300 yards on the ground thanks to terrific play up front and 100-yard-plus running games from tough and physical junior backs Derrick Blanche Jr. and Dominic Kelley.
Fleet junior quarterback Toa Faavae was largely contained by a stout Folsom defense, but the 10.9-sprinter did get one touchdown, which proved decisive, on a 1-yard sneak late in the third quarter.

Folsom got another gritty effort from sophomore quarterback Ryder Lyons, who accounted for 242 total yards and completed 15 of 21 passes. The defense showed well, but De La Salle chewered up nearly 32 minutes of a 48-minute clock to improve to 3-2 after losing tough games to Orange Lutheran (35-14) and Serra (28-0).

Folsom, which lost in similar fashion at Serra, 21-14, dropped to 3-2.
De La Salle now leads the series 7-2 after the two teams had split the last four meetings, including CIF State Division 1-AA title games. They very easily could face off again in December, likely at De La Salle's Owen Owens Stadium.
