Top 10 California high school football LA City Section rankings (9/25/2023)

Week 6 league matchups of Birmingham-Granada Hills, Carson-Narbonne and San Pedro-Gardena could impact the rankings.

Los Angeles City Section football Top 10 rankings as of Sept. 25, heading into Week 6.

(All Week 6 games are schedule for Friday at 7 p.m. unless stated otherwise)

1. Birmingham (3-2)

The Patriots traveled to Texas to take on Steel High and fell 49-7, but the team got all-you-can-eat BBQ, so that's good. Birmingham will officially begin its journey to a fourth straight City Section Open Division final this week when it starts West Valley League play.

Last week: No. 1 | Next up: at Granada Hills

2. Garfield (5-1)

Damian Cornejo ran for 175 yards and four TDs in a 54-0 win over Huntington Park. The Bulldogs are the favorites to win the Eastern League. October 20 against Legacy (6-0) looks to be a league matchup worth keeping marked on the calendar.

Last week: No. 2 | Next up: at Bell High

3. Carson (6-0)

Carson rolled over Torres 64-0, but will embark on Game 1 in the Marine League, which is the toughest league in the City this season. If the Colts take down Narbonne on Thursday night, they'll move to No. 2 in the rankings next week.

Last week: No. 3 | Next up: vs Narbonne, Thursday, 7:30 p.m

4. San Pedro (3-2)

The Pirates were tested on the road in South Los Angeles last week, edging Dymally 34-28, thanks to a disciplined gameplan that was centered around their size up front.

Last week: No. 5 ↑ | Next up: at Gardena, 7:30 p.m.

5. Granada Hills (3-1-1)

The Highlanders are coming off a bye week, which should help them prepare for Birmingham, which is coming off an out-of-state trip.

Last week: No. 4 ↓ |  Next up: vs. Birmingham

6. Dymally (4-1)

The Challengers fell for the first time this season last week, 34-28, to San Pedro, but proved they belong in the Open Division playoff conversation if it wins the Coliseum League. The path is there, but can Dymally use it? We'll see.

Last week: No. 7 ↑ | Next up: vs. Fremont, 4 p.m.

7. Palisades (3-2)

The Dolphins lost to Brentwood, 43-24, in somewhat of a neighborhood game last week. Anytime a City Section program takes on quality Southern Section team, that effort holds weight in these rankings.

Last week: No. 6 ↓ | Nextup: vs. Fairfax, 7:30 p.m.

8. Banning (2-3)

The Pilots took down Hueneme 42-14 on Friday, which snapped a three-game losing streak, all at the hands of Southern Section programs in Pasadena Muir, Anaheim Western and Palos Verdes. The three teams have a combined record of 12-3. Banning will be a major contender for the Marine League title because of those defeats.

Last week: No. 9 ↑ | Next up: Bye

9. Narbonne (3-3)

The Gauchos fall to unbeaten Dominguez, 36-33, but will have a chance to climb up the rankings when it enters Marine League play.

Last week: No. 8 ↓ | Next up: at Carson, Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

10. Franklin (2-2-1)

The Panthers are coming off a bye week and will begin Northern League play this week against Torres.

Last week: No. 10 | Next up: at Torres, 4 p.m.

10. Cleveland (4-1)

The Cavs will begin West Valley League play with a real chance to finish second or third in the league, which could give them a great seed in the City Section Division 1 playoffs.

Last week: No. 10 | Next week: at Taft
