San Diego Section Top 10 high school football rankings via SBLive Sports/Sports Illustrated, (10/2/2023)

Lincoln beat Madison 30-0, recording their third shutout of the season

The top six teams in the San Diego Section ranking remained unchanged following the seventh week of games in the section.

Torrey Pines, coming off an impressive 23-12 win at El Camino, makes their season debut in the rankings at No. 10.

Carlsbad and Lincoln, the top two teams in the section, continued their unbeaten seasons with dominant victories in their league openers.

1. Carlsbad (6-0)

Next game: Friday vs. Poway

Previous ranking: 1

Carlsbad was tied 7-7 with Mission Hills late in the second quarter on Friday before scoring 28 points in a row to put the game away. The lancers rushed for 235 yards and had five different players score in the 35-14 victory.

2. Lincoln (7-0)

Next game: Friday vs. Cathedral Catholic (at Mira Mesa HS)

Previous ranking: 2

Lincoln recorded their third shutout of the season, beating Madison 30-0 in Friday's Western League opener. Senior linebacker Jerome Roberts continued his huge season with a 63-yard pick six.

3. Granite Hills (6-0)

Next game: Friday vs. West Hills

Previous ranking: 3

Granite Hills continued their dominance, holding their fourth straight opponent to single digits. They posted a season high in points, beating Santana 42-6.

4. Helix (6-0)

Next game: Friday vs. Grossmont

Previous ranking: 4

Helix opened their Grossmont-Hills League slate on Thursday, dispatching West Hills 41-7. They'll host Grossmont and Santana over the next two weeks.

5. La Costa Canyon (5-1)

Next game: Friday vs. El Camino

Previous ranking: 5

La Costa Canyon was dominant offensively, scoring 49 points for the second straight game in Friday's win over Poway. The Maverick defense limited Poway to 29 passing yards.

6. Mission Hills (4-2)

Next game: Friday at Torrey Pines

Previous ranking: 6

Mission Hills kept pace early but fell behind just before halftime against top-ranked Carlsbad, losing 35-14. Sophomore quarterback Troy Huhn tossed two touchdowns in the loss.

7. Cathedral Catholic (2-5)

Next game: Friday vs. Lincoln (at Mira Mesa HS)

Previous ranking: 9

The Dons ended their five-game losing streak, beating University City 49-21 in Friday's homecoming game. They averaged eight yards per carry, scoring four touchdowns on the ground.

8. Del Norte (5-1)

Next game: Friday vs. Fallbrook

Previous ranking: 8

Del Norte needed overtime for the second time in three games, holding off Rancho Bernardo 49-43 in four overtimes. Six different players found the end zone for the Nighthawks.

9. Mater Dei Catholic (2-3)

Next game: Friday vs. Montgomery

Previous ranking: 10

The Crusaders had a bye last week following their win over St. Augustine. They'll open up play in the Metro-Mesa League this week against Montgomery, looking to add to their nine-game winning streak in league play.

10. Torrey Pines (4-2)

Next game: Friday vs. Mission Hills

Previous ranking: NR

Torrey Pines has put together a four-game winning streak, holding the four opponents to 25 total points. They held El Camino to 12 points on Friday after the Wildcats had scored a combined 161 points in their previous three games.
